Printing
It is possible to manually print 2-sided pages on any printer. I created a four (4) page PDF test print file and step-by-step instructions to help you determine the exact steps to follow for your printer. You can download a zip file containing both here.
I also demonstrate the steps in this YouTube video:
The short answer: We recommend 32 lb paper for the best overall experience — it handles two-sided printing beautifully and holds up well to pens, highlighters, stickers, and correction tape without bleed-through or ghosting.
Looking for a budget-friendly option? 28 lb paper is a solid runner-up. It performs nearly as well as 32 lb paper at a slightly lower price point and still delivers great results for most planner setups.
What about standard 20 lb copy paper? For 2-sided printing, 20 lb paper is not a good choice. The printing from one side shows through on the other side. And if you use markers and highlighters, they may print through completely.
You can use 24 lb paper in a pinch. The show-through is less and it performs better with the markers and highlighters. If you are new to printing pages for your planner, using the less expensive 24-lb paper might be a good way to start out until you are ready to move up to 28 lb or 32 lb papers.
Products
We add bookmarks to all large PDF files and other PDF files where the user might need info to allow them to print specific sections of the document rather than printing all the pages. This short video shows an example of using bookmarks:
You can access the Form Field Text Properties by pressing CTRL-E (or CMD-E). You must have the text highlighted when you do so in order for the properties box to be displayed. Once you have it displayed, it stays active if you move to another field. You may change the font to any you have installed on your computer, change the color, and change the size (within the limitations of the text box size). Most fields are defined to be a single line of text. When possible larger fillable fields are allowed to be multi-line. All fillable PDF fields in Sweet Ginger Design products are set up to allow the user to personalize the fonts.
The free downloadable files that are designed for Classic sized planners – 7″ x 9 1/4″ – print on 8 1/2″ x 11″ (US Letter) size paper. The front (odd-numbered) pages are set against the left and top edges of the sheet so that only two (2) cuts are needed. The back (even-numbered) pages, if set up for 2-sided printing, are aligned to the top and right when you view them and are directly opposite the front (odd-numbered) page. You will need to trim 1 1/2″ from the right hand side and 1 3/4″ from the bottom edge. Or simply trim them at 7″ from the left edge of the page (front or odd-number page facing you) and 9 1/4″ from the top of the page. A template showing the area to be trimmed is available here.
We use layers in some of our PDF files to provide options for how the product can be printed. This short video provides an example:
